EFL will probe Millers’ Covid postponements

- By ANDY TURNER Sky Blues Reporter

COVENTRY City’s relegation rivals Birmingham City have called on the EFL to investigate what their manager claims is Rotherham’s ‘unfair’ advantage after another coronavirus outbreak at the Championship outfit.

Blues’ boss Aitor Karanka has spoken out after his side were beaten 1-0 at Barnsley on Saturday, leaving them still three points above the Millers in the final relegation place.

The Sky Blues, meanwhile, are a place above their groundshare landlords but six points off United with Saturday’s clash against the Millers called off.

Paul Warne’s men have three games in hand after their weekend clash with Brentford and last night’s trip to Luton were postponed after positive tests in the Millers’ camp.

And Karanka is worried that by the time they do end up playing those matches, it will be against opponents who have nothing to play for.

Karanka said: “They are going to play the games maybe when the other teams know their positions and it isn’t going to be the same.

“Now, for example, we played them after seven or eight games, they are going to play the games when they are rested, they are going to play against Brentford, maybe they are in the Premier League and or they are already in the play-off positions.

“It is something the EFL need to check because I don’t think it is normal, it is unfair.

“Our club hasn’t had one game postponed because we are looking after ourselves.

“It is [not] the first time that Rotherham is having the same problem. When you are making one mistake, maybe, but the second one I think for me is not fair.”

The EFL have confirmed they will look into the circumstances around Rotherham’s latest postponements.

They are going to play the games maybe when the other teams know their positions and it isn’t going to be the same.
