Heartbreak as carnival cancelled for second year running

- By CLAIRE HARRISON

HEARTBROKEN Nuneaton Carnival organisers say they have been forced to take the ‘hard’ decision to cancel for the second year running.

It was supposed to be the 90th event last year, but this was cancelled due to the pandemic, and now the celebrations have been put on hold again.

But Martin Hobbins, carnival committee chair, said efforts may be made to host some sort of event later in the year - pending Covid-19 restrictions.

“Unfortunately due to the unprecedented circumstances we are currently living with we have as a committee to take the hard decision to again cancel the carnival for 2021,” he said.

“We have not taken this decision lightly but have to accept the fact that we cannot put on an event that would allow us to be as free spirited as we would like to be due to the current pandemic and the restrictions that we would have to adhere to.”

He went on: “We are looking at ideas for hopefully trying to get an event later in the year dependant on how the pandemic pans out once the restrictions have started to be lifted.

“The committee as a whole are gutted that we have had to take this decision but feel that it is the right thing to do and hope the public totally understand and will support us as they always do when we are able to return.”

The carnival is the latest to fall victim to the ongoing pandemic.

But events like the local elections will go-ahead - albeit very differently.
