Lives of many victims’
BILL WHICH WILL CREATE LIST OF STALKERS & DOMESTIC ABUSERS
Common may have contributed to the amendment being passed in the House of Lords.
Zoe said: “The fact that the police didn’t work with the organisers of the vigil was really quite shocking and the scenes afterwards were just horrific. They just could have handled it better.
“Because we put that amendment in and it was being discussed on Monday, I do think that had an effect on the fact that we had a landslide. I’ve been writing to ministers for years about this and if felt like banging my head against a brick wall.”
However, Zoe says the work is “only just getting started” and she looks forward to seeing how the government will implement the amendment.
She said: “I’m really passionate about it and one of the things that I would really like to do is have a meeting with the government about how they want to implement this because it still seems to me that they’ve got reservations and I don’t know why.
“I’ve worked in tech for over 20 years, I have a lot of experience. Data and analytics is really my specialist field and I just wish that they would listen.
“But I’m also a victim, so I’m a lay person, in terms of law. I’ve experienced how the system really fails victims, and how it’s built for perpetrators.”
Speaking on the amendment, Labour peer Baroness Royall said: “We have had years of guidance and good intention, but too many women live in fear and too many have been abused, stalked or murdered.
“I am delighted peers from across the Lords have recognised action is now needed. It is time to proactively identify, assess and manage domestic abusers and stalkers, and for a national strategy underpinned by law. Nothing less will do if we are to keep women and girls safe.”
