Decision day on shop and apartments
INITIAL OPPOSITION TO PLAN
APARTMENTS and a revamped Nisa supermarket are edging closer to approval.
Coventry City Council planning officers have recommended the scheme at Westmede Centre, on Winsford Avenue, in Allesley Park, is approved ahead of a final decision by a committee tomorrow.
Plans will demolish the current Nisa supermarket and above apartments, replacing it with another Nisa store alongside 24 apartments and car parking space.
Six ‘duplex’ apartments will be created above the supermarket with a shared rooftop garden, alongside 18 apartments in two blocks built opposite on a current car park.
The scheme was initially taken to a planning committee in September but a decision was deferred after concerns about the parking provision and residential amenity space. New amenity space has been provided between the two apartment blocks; while a parking management plan has also been submitted, showing the new Nisa store will have 19 parking spaces, while 42 more parking spaces will be for residents only. As she did last year, planning officer Ayesha Saleem has again recommended approval.
Ahead of the meeting, she said in a report: “The proposed residential development is within a sustainable location, close to public transport routes, local shops and services.
“The scheme is considered to be acceptable in principle.
“The main considerations are therefore the provision of sufficient
parking and the creation of a satisfactory residential environment in response to the concerns raised previously by members.
“In this regard it is considered that the revised proposals address these concerns.”
The scheme prompted 10 letters of objection last year, with a further five objections following amended plans in February, raising concerns over over-development, insufficient parking, and scale.
