Popular city restaurant is on the move

JOB CUTS AS PLAYWRIGHTS HEADS TO CANAL BASIN

- By DANNY THOMPSON News Reporter

POPULAR Coventry eatery Playwrights Bar and Bistro has announced a relocation as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The independent venture on Hay Lane, in the city’s historic Cathedral Quarter, is popular with customers due to its fantastic food, friendly service and boutique feel.

However, the financial implications of the coronavirus pandemic mean it will not be renewing its lease at the premises.

And while the restaurant will still be trading, from Playwrights Cafe at Coventry Canal Basin less than a mile away, some jobs will be lost as a result of the downsizing.

The news was broken on the restaurant’s social media this week.

A post from the bistro’s Twitter account read: “Exactly a year ago today, we were forced to close our doors for the first time in order to play our part in the coronavirus pandemic.

“Since then we have had only 17 weeks of trade, all 17 of those weeks were under some kind of restrictions imposed by the government (Rule of Six, curfews, limited capacity, no household mixing, etc).

“While we understand that this was necessary in order to protect the NHS and save lives, we have had a very difficult time behind the scenes. “With the lease being up for renewal at our bar and bistro in 4-6 Hay Lane, we feel like this isn’t the right time for us to make such a financial commitment in renewing the lease, so unfortunately we will not be reopening our doors there. “Don’t worry, Playwrights will live on!

“We have our beautiful Playwrights Cafe situated in Coventry Canal Basin, overlooking the water.

“From there we will be open seven days a week, and we will also be continuing our popular delivery service, bringing Playwrights’ food straight to your door, as well as welcoming guests to dine in when we were able to do so.

“We will be updating our website and social medias over the coming weeks to reflect the changes. So please check them out for further information.

“The saddest part of all this is the fact that we cannot accommodate all of our amazing team as Playwrights at the canal basin just isn’t big enough for us or for all of us.

“So, if there are any businesses out there looking for some fantastic catering staff kitchen and front house, let us know.

“Thank you to everybody who has supported us in our time at Hay Lane, and to those who have supported our delivery service over the past 12 months.

“We hope that we see lots of familiar faces, and lots of new ones at the canal base and when we can reopen that we also hope that you continue to use our delivery service, which we’ve worked so hard to build up during this pandemic, delivering our hot, fresh, delicious food, straight to your door.

“We look forward to seeing you all as soon as we can at Playwrights Cafe, Canal Basin.”

Whilst we understand that this was necessary to protect lives... we have had a very difficult time behind the scenes. Bistro post
