Go-ahead for flats plan on derelict land in Coventry
NEW apartments will be built on derelict land behind houses in Coventry.
Aquia Housing has been given planning approval to build 12 one-bed apartments on land to the rear of 1-13 Wycliffe Road West, in Upper Stoke.
Spanning across a two-storey block, the scheme will provide supported living flats for adults aged 18-65 with learning and physical difficulties.
The site has been subject to a number of planning applications in recent years with outline planning approved for eight homes in 2018.
Council planning officer Liam D’onofrio said the new scheme
“closely follows” the previously approved plan and that there was a recognised need for adult social care in the area.
Delegating approval, he said in a report: “The site is located within a sustainable location close to the public transport links on Ansty Road and within close proximity to shops and services within Walsgrave Road and Ansty Road Local Centres.
“The proposed residential use will be compatible with surrounding residential uses and will provide a high-quality residential environment that assists in delivering urban regeneration on this vacant site.”
Each apartment will have a living room, kitchen area, bedroom and bathroom to encourage the residents to gain greater independence within the surrounding local community.
Six cycle spaces and 13 vehicle spaces are proposed, and a staff office with 24-hour presence is included - with six to eight staff on site at any given time.
In planning submissions to the city council, Aquia Housing said the development will be run by Midway Care Group.
It added: “There is now an emphasis on encouraging individuals to live with greater independence whilst care and assistance are still provided all year round 24/7 in a safe, supportive environment.
“The proposal will provide much needed residential apartments within a sustainable location.”
