You can name new four-legged police recruit

- By BEN ECCLESTON News Reporter ben.eccleston@reachplc.com

THIS gorgeous bundle of fur is West Midlands Police’s newest four-legged recruit and will be the force’s first ever wellbeing dog.

The eight-week-old Maltipoo, who will help provide emotional support following difficult or traumatic incidents, is ready to get going, but is still in need of a name.

Maltipoos are a fairly new breed with a small stature, a rounded head, and floppy ears, and they carry the appearance of a puppy for nearly their entire lives.

Inspector Paul Van Veen came up with the proposal for the first ever West Midlands Police therapy dog after seeing how well it worked in other forces that have already realised the benefits of time well spent with a furry companion.

The Maltipoo will go in to schools to help officers connect better with the children and also be on hand to provide emotional support following difficult or traumatic incidents.

Her first deployments will be focused on helping vulnerable people as lockdown restrictions are lifted. The pup has now joined her new owner - a trained mental health first aider - but the force want to ensure that she has a meaningful name, and want your help to decide what that name should be.

Anyone wanting to put forward a name can submit their entry, and the reasons behind the name, by emailing dy_ partnerships_team@westmidlands.pnn.police.uk

West Midlands Police will choose their four favourite names and put it to a public vote.
