The candidates for upcoming local elections

- By TOM DAVIS Local Democracy Reporter

CANDIDATES for the upcoming local elections in Coventry have been finalised.

There are 111 candidates vying for election in Coventry across 19 seats when voters take to the polls on Thursday, May 6.

That includes a byelection in Wyken following the death of Hazel Sweet.

People will decide who they want to represent their ward at Coventry City Council, which is in charge of local services such as schools, roads and bin collections.

Last year’s elections were delayed because of Covid, but they have been given the go-ahead this year with a string of measures in place to make them Covid secure.

Voters will be required to wear face coverings inside polling stations, while they will also be asked to bring their own pen or pencil to mark their ballot.

Coventry City Council is currently run by the Labour Party, holding 40 out of the 54 seats. The Conservative opposition have 13 seats, while there is currently one Independent.

Council leader George Duggins and opposition leader Gary Ridley are among those standing for re-election.

New faces are guaranteed in the Council House with some changes in party candidates.

Conservative councillors Allan Andrews and Tim Mayer are stepping down in Earlsdon and Westwood respectively, while Labour’s Lynette Kelly will also no longer stand in Sherbourne.

Counting for local elections is taking place at the Ricoh Arena the day after on Friday, May 7, with the process taking longer due to reductions in staff due to social distancing.
