It’s Hamer time again as ace is back on track

- By ANDY TURNER Sky Blues Reporter

GUSTAVO Hamer has been one of Coventry City’s standout performers of the season, taking to the Championship effortlessly when he arrived at the club last summer.

Clearly top end second tier quality with the potential for progression to the Premier League, the 23-year-old midfielder has been one of the first names on the team sheet for much of the Sky Blues campaign.

But a recent dip in form from the eye-catching Dutch/brazilian who appeared to have hit burn-out point resulted in him being rested on the bench for a couple of games.

Appearing refreshed at AFC Bournemouth at the weekend when he went on for the last 20-odd minutes in place of skipper Liam Kelly, Hamer put himself about well and looked back to the player fans have come to love during his first season at the club.

But what did the man who picks the team think?

Here manager Mark Robins gives his assessment of the player ahead of tomorrow night’s big relegation showdown at Rotherham United.

“I think he ran about and got himself into a position where he could affect the game in a positive way or a breaking up play kind of way,” said the City boss. “He got himself into positions to win the ball back or block off and his use of the ball was okay, so that’s what you want from him and he’ll have benefited from a breather, there’s no doubt about it.

“And it’s difficult because you are running out of games and running out of time and we need everyone firing, and that’s not where we’re at. “But we have a few days to get everyone together to see where we are ahead of Thursday.” n Coventry City’s big relegation sixpointer at Rotherham United has been selected for coverage by Sky Sports.

The Sky Blues travel to the New York Stadium tomorrow looking to put further distance between themselves and the third-from-bottom Millers, who are currently six points behind but with three games in hand.

That first game in hand for Paul Warne’s men came last night at home to QPR, after which the South Yorkshire club face a quick turn-around to face Mark Robins’ men less than 48 hours later.

The magnitude of the fixture has clearly caught the attention of Sky and fans will be able to watch tomorrow night’s away game on the channel, kicking off at 7pm.

For this reason, the match will not be available to watch on ifollow in the UK.
