Still time to get tickets for events at the big Games

- By ROBSON MCCALLISTER News Reporter

THERE is still time for people to get a ticket for every sport at the Commonwealth Games after the final major resale was launched last week.

The launch coincided with the unveiling of Sandwell Aquatics Centre, the £73m legacy piece of the Commonwealth Game.

Sports ranging from rugby to basketball will be up for grabs as the clock draws nearer to the opening ceremony of the Games on July 28. The Sandwell Aquatics Centre will be a prominent part of the Games with 66 medal ceremonies taking place at the venue.

Birmingham 2022 CEO Ian Reid and Sandwell Director of Regeneration and Growth Tony Mcgovern were among some of the people in attendance in Smethwick last week. Speaking at the aquatics centre, Birmingham 2022 CEO Ian Reid urged sports fans to grab tickets whilst they still can.

“As of today there are tickets available for every sport. Some more so than others, as you would expect,” he said. “We’re desperate to try and fill as many of these venues as we can.”

Speaking about the aquatics centre itself, Ian was delighted with the final result. The aquatics centre will host both the swimming and diving events at the Commonwealth Games and will be open to the general public in June 2023..

“It’s a wow factor, I think we’ve seen that from everyone who has come in this morning. Especially those of us that have been on this journey to see its construction develop right from the foundation through to this, it’s beautiful to see in its final form. .

“Huge credit to Sandwell Council and their contractors. Despite challenging circumstances this venue has been delivered on budget, they’ve hit every milestone.

“We’re standing here today and can see the fruits of that labour. Huge credit to them.”

For Tony, the unveiling marked years of hard work. It’s hoped that the aquatics centre will lead to further investment within the region.

“For me it’s a sense of relief mixed with great pride actually. Relief that we’ve delivered a world-class facility alongside our construction partner Wates but also proud that we’re hosting the Commonwealth Games so it puts Sandwell on the map,” he said.

“Overall this is a day of celebration for me, for people in Sandwell, and for people who have helped in delivering this project. It’s something we’ve been working towards for many years.

“The important thing for me is that this is going to be a catalyst for Sandwell for further regeneration. It’s going to play an important part, not just in the sporting sense, but in the wider regeneration sense.”
