School’s bid to make it safer for its students to get to class

- By CLAIRE HARRISON

ASH Green School has made a bid to make it safer for students to get to school.

Ash Green Lane is known locally for being extremely busy, especially by the secondary school.

Currently the school has one main entrance, which both students and vehicles use to get on to the site.

To make it safer for pupils, the school has asked for the green light to create a new ‘pedestrian gate’ on the fencing at the front of the school.

It has asked Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council for permission for a pedestrian gate with access control to Ash Green School as well as associated works to the highway and footpath. The application contains a number of documents including a CGI of what the new gate would look like.

It also contains an explanation, which states: “The proposal is to provide a new pedestrian gated access on Ash Green Lane in order to separate pedestrians from the vehicular access to the site. This pedestrian access is proposed to link pedestrians from Ash Green Lane to the main reception to the school. Pedestrian access being improved could result in increased numbers of students travelling to the school by walking.”

The proposed pedestrian gate will be located at the back of the footway on Ash Green Lane, roughly 25 metres to the south of the existing vehicular access. It would have two sections of two metre guard railings to be installed fronting the gate to prevent students being able to come out of the gate straight into the carriageway.

The planning application is being looked at by the team at the Town Hall. They will make recommendations on whether it should be approved.

The date for the decision has been set as June 7.
