Viktor’s delight at outstanding season at City

-

VIKTOR Gyokeres has spoken about his outstanding season at Coventry City and his ambitions to play at the highest level of the game in England.

The Sky Blues star has caught the attention of many with 18 goals for the Championship club this season and admits that there is “interest” in him this summer. But the 23-year-old insists that while his aim is to play in the Premier League, it’s not his current focus.

City manager Mark Robins has been clear that while he knows the Sweden international will receive plenty of attention in the summer transfer window, he’s determined to keep hold of the striker, along with his other key assets Gustavo Hamer and Callum O’hare.

Speaking to Swedish sports paper Sportbladet, Gyokeres said: “It has been a very fun season and my first really full season in England, you have to say. I have played regularly in Coventry and it has gone well for me. The Championship is a tough league to play in and considering the requirements of our club, we have exceeded expectations.”

Asked what’s so tough about the Championship, the strong and mobile centre-forward who started his English career with Brighton, said: “There are so many matches and that you always have to be fresh to perform at the top. It is also a physical league with many fast and strong players, which requires a lot of you as a player.”

As for what he’s most happy with from last season, he said: “It’s that I scored quite a few goals. I have had to play all the time and have developed during the season. I feel that I have taken steps and developed my top qualities, goal shooting and also my strength on the field and my game in depth.”

Gyokeres was the subject of firm interest in the January transfer window and has already been the subject of speculation linking him with newly promoted Fulham. Asked how he views all the rumours about a potential move this summer, he said: “I know that there is a lot of interest and it is fun and a proof that I did well. But that’s not something I’m focusing on.

“I feel very good here in Coventry and come from a good season. But of course you want to play as high up as possible in the best leagues.”

Asked if he has any dreams of where he wants to play, he added: “I feel very at home here in England and it is probably the Premier League you want to play in, preferably. I would probably have fit in there considering my style of play and that I played in the Championship. The Premier League is a league that attracts. And I think I have adapted well to England and the culture and everything around football here.”
