- By CLAIRE HARRISON News Reporter

CROWDS are being invited to watch special Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Beacons be lit in Nuneaton, Bedworth and Bulkington. It is taking place tonight.

The events across the borough will be timed with similar events across the UK and the Commonwealth. The borough’s beacons are just three of thousands being lit at 9.45pm simultaneously.

Councillor Kris Wilson, Leader of Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council, urged residents to get involved.

“HM The Queen has given 70 long and glorious years’ service to our nation and the Commonwealth,” the council leader said.

“It is only fitting that we honour her historic service. Nuneaton, Bedworth and Bulkington will join in with the commemorations taking part both home and abroad, and I would encourage residents to join in with this momentous occasion.” The events will be held at the following locations:

Nuneaton Town Hall steps, All Saints Square in Bedworth, St James’ Church, School Road, Bulkington.

The principal beacon lighting will take place in a special ceremony at Buckingham Palace tonight. This will take the form of a lighting installation with The Queen’s Green Canopy ‘Tree of Trees’ sculpture and projections onto the front of Buckingham Palace.

Also today, Nuneaton will play home to a ‘Freedom of the Borough’ Parade. Then there will be proclamations across the borough.

Starting at 2pm, at Nuneaton, award winning Nuneaton and Bedworth crier Paul Gough, who will be joined by Nuneaton and Bedworth’s Mayor, councillor Jeff Clarke, will read a proclamation heralding the lighting of the beacons later that day.

The pair will then do likewise in Bedworth at 3pm and in Bulkington at 3.30pm.
