Big Vik offer will test City, insists ex-player

- By CHRIS WATSON Football Writer

COVENTRY City’s resolve could be tested in this summer’s transfer window if a big bid comes in for striker Viktor Gyokeres. That is the opinion of former Sky Blues midfielder Carlton Palmer.

Gyokeres has attracted interest from other clubs after scoring 18 goals for Mark Robins’ side in the 2021-22 season. Fulham, Burnley and Middlesbrough are all reported to be keen on signing the Sweden international.

Coventry will no doubt be keen to hang on to their top scorer as they prepare for the new Championship campaign.

However, that all depends on whether an offer is made for the 23-year-old which is deemed too good to turn down.

Asked if he could see Gyokeres moving on during the summer transfer window, Palmer told Football League World: “I’m sure Mark Robins will be looking to add to his squad, not looking to sell any players.

“But again, at the end of the day, if somebody came in with a 15 million offer or 18 million, I’m sure Coventry resistance will be tested.”

Journalist Alan Nixon has said on Twitter that Coventry will make a “major” sale this summer to help fund incoming transfers.

As well as Gyokeres, the likes of Callum O’hare and Gustavo Hamer have also been linked with moves away from the CBS Arena.

Meanwhile, Crystal Palace striker Luke Plange is said to be a loan target for the Sky Blues - and could potentially be a replacement for Gyokeres should he be sold.

The Coventry Telegraph’s Andy Turner recently reported: “As things stand, and assuming a top flight or upwardly mobile Championship club doesn’t break City’s resolve with offers they can’t refuse for Gustavo Hamer, Viktor Gyokeres or Callum O’hare, Robins will be working to a limited budget.

“We already know he needs a new left-sided centre-half, left wingback and attacking midfielder, and possibly a new striker depending on what happens with the likes of Tyler Walker and Martyn Waghorn, both of whom have another year on their contracts but may want to secure more guaranteed game time elsewhere.”

Asked how much business he’s looking to do, Robins recently told Coventry Telegraph: “I will try to do as much as I possibly can do with what I have available, but then certain things will take place where we have to move people on, players who haven’t played enough.

“And then some may be unhappy about the lack of game time they’ve had, so that might turn into something different, but that remains to be seen.

“But ultimately, we have got to try to move it forward again, which is what we always try to do, and what we have done.”
