City boss is confident window will ‘ramp up’

- By ANDY TURNER

MARK Robins has provided a transfer update for Coventry City fans as he continues to add quality to his squad this summer.

The Sky Blues boss revealed he was on the phone yesterday with another manager trying to sort out a deal amid a sluggish start to the transfer window which he’s confident will ‘ramp up’ soon.

So far City have made just one new signing in former Chelsea starlet Kasey Palmer who this week joined the club from Championship rivals Bristol City for an undisclosed fee. The 25-year-old playmaker has signed a three-year deal at the CBS Arena.

“We’re trying to bring new players in but I have to say it’s been pretty slow this summer, as it has for everyone, but that will ramp up, I have no doubt,” Robins said yesterday.

“I have just taken a call just now, on the phone to another manager.

“I’m trying to do deals so there are loads of things still going on, lots of plates spinning.”

Asked if he has a number of new players in mind, he said: “We have got specific targets and specific positions. The targets may change for the positions we need to fill but I need to carry a slightly smaller squad but I want more quality wherever I can in order to help bridge that gap to get higher up the table than we did last year. “The longer you are in the league the better chance you have got. That might sound strange, but it’s true. The longer you are in the division you can establish yourself and try to build your way to a better future. But it’s really exciting. The fixtures are out and everyone starts planning their trips and hopefully with the cost of living rising people will be able to get there.”

He added: “We know the ceiling we can go to financially so every penny counts, and always has done here, and nothing changes on that front.

“So we have to make sure we get as much headroom as we can to make sure we get the players in that we need. That’s the key thing, we need numbers and we need quality and that’s what we’ll be doing over the next couple of months.

“The window doesn’t close until September 1, so we will wait with bated breath until the window shuts. But it gives us time to recruit and hopefully we can have them in place sooner rather than later, but I want to make sure we get the right ones.”
