Former Royal Warwicks Club near the city centre up for sale

- By ENDA MULLEN News Reporter

A FORMER ex-servicemen’s club on the edge of Coventry city centre is up for sale.

The former Royal Warwicks Club is located on Tower street next to the Coventry ring road.

The site is being marketed as a development opportunity with the particulars suggesting it could be redeveloped as a residential site, student accommodation or leisure use.

It is not known when the club closed its doors but the last update on its Facebook page was in August 2019, promoting the club as a potential Christmas party venue.

The club dated back to 1919 and was set up by soldiers from the 7th battalion of the Royal Warwickshire regiment. It was originally located in Prior Street but is believed to have moved to Tower Street in 1977.

In 1997 the club - visible from the Foleshill Road junction of the ring road - was given a £55,000 revamp. It was formed to support ex-servicemen and as a place for them and their families to socialise,

The club site, which sits as an ‘island’ between Tower Street, Henry Street and the ring road is being marketed by Knight Frank since April this year.

The particulars state: “The property occupies a prominent position in Coventry city centre and would suit a number of uses including residential, student accommodation or leisure use, Subject to planning and all necessary consents.”

Back in 2011 we reported how the Royal Warwicks Club was thought to be under threat after appearing on an estate agent’s website by mistake. At the time club bosses insisted no such decision would be made without consulting its hundreds of members.

They also said they had been looking for investment into the club but that if that did not go the way it hoped it was looking at other alternatives.

The site is advertised on Rightmove and the particulars there state: “The site comprises an ‘island’ site, bounded by Henry Street, Tower Street and the Ringway. The site is fairly level and currently comprises a former social club. The site area extends to approximately 0.3 acres.

“There is no current live, or pending planning applications for the site and all interested parties are recommended to make their own enquiries of Coventry City Council’s planning department. The property is situated in a prominent position, fronting the ring road, on the northern side of Coventry city centre.

“The surrounding area is mixed used in nature, with student accommodation to the north, east and west and commercial uses to the south.”

Further details on the site are available from Knight Frank.
