Woman found dead at scene of huge explosion in the Midlands

A WOMAN has died following a suspected gas explosion at a house in Dulwich Road, Kingstandi­ng, Birmingham, on Sunday.

Emergency services rushed to the scene shortly after 8.30pm.

A man is said to be fighting for his life in hospital and four other men were assessed for injuries by ambulance crews at the scene.

West Midlands Fire Service confirmed the news on Twitter, saying: “We’re very sad to confirm that a woman has been found dead at the scene of last night’s explosion in Kingstandi­ng. Our thoughts and sympathies are with everyone affected.”

One house was destroyed in the explosion and several others were damaged. A spokespers­on for West Midlands Police said: “All emergency services and utility companies are at the scene of a house explosion on Dulwich Road, Kingstandi­ng, Birmingham. One house is destroyed with others significan­tly damaged. Cars have also been damaged.

“There are reports of casualties but the number and severity of their injuries in unknown at this time. Evacuation­s are taking place.

“Those evacuated will be told where to meet. People in the area must immediatel­y follow the instructio­ns of first responders.

Dulwich Road and surround roads are closed and will be for a very long time. Please help us by avoiding the area. The cause of the explosion is not yet known.”

Cadent Gas sent specialist­s to the scene to investigat­e but said it was too early to speculate on the cause of the explosion. A spokespers­on said: “Our teams are on-site at the incident in Kingstandi­ng, assisting the multi-agency response as the gas emergency service for the West Midlands. It is too early to speculate on the cause. If ever anyone smells gas it is important to act immediatel­y and ring the national gas emergency service on 0800 111 999.”
