Sky Blues feel the Burn as CJ gets set for new Turf

COVENTRY City target CJ Eganriley is set to be confirmed as a Burnley player this week as Vincent Kompany raids his old club to further bolster his squad.

The 19-year-old Manchester City defender was due to report for a medical with the Sky Blues last Friday ahead of a move to the club but instead has opted to stay closer to home and work with the Premier League champions’ legendary captain.

Egan-riley is expected to be joined by Taylor Harwood-bellis, who had a loan spell at Stoke City last season, and the pair will follow Scott Twine and Luke Mcnally into Turf Moor as the Clarets look to tie up early business ahead of a return to the Championship.

Harwood-bellis will join Burnley on loan while Egan-riley will be a permanent move. Sources in Manchester suggest Egan-riley is out of contract at City and that the two clubs have agreed a compensation deal to avoid a tribunal.

The latter is keen for first-team football and the lure of Kompany helped Burnley see off competition from other clubs. The teenager has come through the ranks at City and has represented England at age-group level. Born and raised in Manchester, the centre-back has been at the Etihad Stadium for more than a decade. Primarily a central defender, he can also play at rightback and as a holding midfielder, adding versatility to the Clarets ranks. He was a regular captain of City age group sides and part of the Under-18s title winning team in 2020.

He made his first-team debut during the Carabao Cup meeting against League One side Wycombe Wanderers last season. He went on to play 90 minutes against Sporting in the Champions League while his Premier League bow came off the bench as a late sub against Newcastle United.
