Major M6 delay warning ahead of overnight closures

- By NAOMI DE SOUZA & CLAIRE HARRISON News Reporters

A WARNING about major delays has been issued to motorists ahead of a number of overnight closures on the M6.

National Highways needs to undertake ‘safety enhancement’ work on the carriageway.

The night-time closures will take place between junction 4, for Coleshill, and Junction 6 as well a section of the M42 that connects to the M6. Engineers need to install a new safety barrier.

The closures start this Thursday night and resume from October 17 until October 19.

“Drivers are advised to allow extra time for their journeys when a number of overnight closures take place on the M6 near Birmingham,” a National Highways spokesman warned.

“National Highways is carrying out safety enhancements on the M6 between junctions 4 (Coleshill) and 5 (Castle Bromwich), including replacing the steel central reservation with a more modern, concrete barrier. Installation of the new barrier, which significantly reduces the risk of vehicles crossing over from one carriageway to another, is now reaching an end and the work is switching to the motorway verge.

“Enhancements to be carried out there include drainage improvements and the construction of three new emergency areas. The traffic management system will now switch to the verge.”

National Highways said that most of the work will be carried out with lane closures but, to keep workers and road users safe, there will be a number of full road closures, which are:

Full northbound closure M6 between junctions 4 and 6. Northbound M6 junction 4 entry slip road closed. A full closure of the M42 northbound to M6 northbound slip road and the M42 southbound to M6 northbound link road. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, October 17, 18 and 19

The M6 southbound will be closed between junctions 6 and 4 also the M6 junction 5 southbound entry slip road. The M6 junction 6 southbound link road from A38 Salford Circus roundabout will be shut and the M6 junction 6 link southbound from A38 (M) Aston Expressway.

All closures take place between 9pm and 6am each night with the exception of October 18 when the closure will begin at 11pm. Clearly signed diversion routes will be in place.

The closures on the M6 are separate to others this weekend on the M42 near Birmingham Airport.
