OH GOD NO!

- By ANDY TURNER Sky Blues Reporter

COVENTRY City have suffered a major injury blow with the news that Matty Godden could be sidelined for up to four months.

And skipper Liam Kelly, who has yet to play this season, is going to be out for longer than anticipated after picking up a secondary injury amid his return from a serious hamstring tear.

The double blow put a dampener on the Sky Blues after they recorded a brilliant 2-0 win at the Bet365 Stadium on Saturday to secure their third Championship victory in a row and lift them another place to third from bottom.

Striker Godden, pictured, suffered an ankle injury against Sheffield United on Wednesday night and scans later revealed he has ruptured ligaments and he will require surgery.

The 31-year-old has had horrendous luck with injuries and illness over the last couple of years with a long-standing foot injury and appendicitis among his problems. “Matty is going to be out for a while, three to four months,” said City boss Mark Robins. “He’s ruptured a ligament in his right ankle so it’s just his luck really, terrible luck, and he’s going to be out for a few months. “His foot was in the air and the ball hit him mid-air with a loose ankle and he moved it outside and he has put his weight through it as it landed and obviously that has caused him a major problem. Sod’s law!”

Asked if he will require surgery, he said: “Probably. It’s a really big blow for him and for us.”

Kelly has been out since pre-season with a recurrence of a serious hamstring strain that kept him out for several months last term.

The 32-year-old midfielder had been close to a return to action after getting through successive Under-21 games in the last fortnight.

But Robins revealed: “As for Liam, who was nearing his return from an unrelated injury, he felt a problem with his knee earlier in the week and had a scan, and he too is going to be missing for a little while.

“Hopefully, we can get both Liam and Matty recovered and back playing for us as quick as possible.”

Kelly, who was limited to just 16 appearances last season, is in the final year of his contract and remains the only player to have come all the way with the Sky Blues through from League Two to the Championship.
