Son of Binley Mega Chippy founder set to open new chip shop
A BRAND-NEW chip shop will soon be opening its doors in Coventry. It will be run by the son of the founders of world-famous takeaway Binley Mega Chippy.
Deano Tandon, who had helped his dad out at the family business since the age of eight, has taken over the former The Spires chippy on Queen Isabels Avenue, Cheylesmore. It was set to open on Tuesday but remains shut due to ‘family reasons.’
A statement on the window reads:
“Due to unforeseen circumstances, we will not be opening on Tuesday 25th October due to family reasons. We will update you on a new date soon, our sincere apologies.” Deano has breathed new life into the previously vacant chip shop which has been closed since 2019. Speaking ahead of the opening, he said: “We’ve put a lot of hard work into it. This one came up as an opportunity when I saw it was closed down.
“I used to buy scallop batches from here. I wanted to bring it back to life and to bring something back to the area.” He added: “It’s been a hard graft, it took six months to get it all ready when it was meant to take three. The locals are so happy to see it’s back, it’s been empty for three years.”
Deano said there has also been a lot of interest from people looking for jobs, with five people already having asked to work there. However, the cost of living crisis has increased the costs of running restaurants, although this has not put him off.
He said: “It is a worry at the moment with the cost of living. It will definitely be a test.
“The main point is that Deano’s Chippy will create more jobs in the local community which I think is so important. We all need to remain together in these difficult times as then it all works out in the long run.”
