Danger man Ashlee looks to climb the boxing ladder

- By MATTHEW BOZEAT Boxing Writer

ASHLEE Eales reckons dodging punches as he climbs boxing’s ladder is safer than his day job !

Eales believes he’s heading to the top of the welterweight division – and the 28-year-old from Nuneaton has proved he has a head for heights.

He says fighting the likes of Olympian Serge Ambomo is a doddle compared to his other job.

In between fights, Eales works with his father fixing television aerials and says they have had some scary moments.

Eales, who’s matched with James Mccarthy at the Sports Connexion in Coventry on November 25, said: “I don’t miss being on top of a ladder – especially at this time of year.

“There have been a couple of times when we’ve been up there in the thunder and lightning holding onto each other at the top of the ladder so we don’t fall off.

“It’s not a nice feeling being up there thinking you might get struck by lightning at any moment! It can get scary up on those roofs.”

Eales expected a scary night in Solihull in September.

Ambomo had chinned a 4-0 prospect in his previous fight, but struggled to lay a glove on Eales.

Eales said: “He was saying he wanted to beat me and then fight for a title.

“But I boxed his head off. I kept him on the end of my straight shots and he couldn’t do anything.

“I was expecting a hard fight, but it was quite easy.”

That performance has given Eales plenty of belief going into his match with Mccarthy in Coventry.

He said: “I know he’s game and looks to upset prospects, but I’m going to smash him to bits and then go for the Midlands title next year.

“This will be my fifth fight of the year and I want to be pushing on for titles soon.

RED Corner ABC is back with a bang.

The Coventry club folded in 2016 – and has been revived by Michael Green. He and Joe Sherriff served their amateur apprenticeships at Red Corner before turning pro and Green was in the corner with Warren Leybourne when he launched the club’s new era in style.

The 24 year-old stopped Kyle Dennett (Wild Star Boxing) inside a round of their welterweight clash at Newdigate WMC and showed plenty of promise.

Dennett tried to smother Leyborune and deny him the room to use his long levers, but Leybourne was able to shorten his punches and stunned him with a left hook that only travelled a few inches.

Dennett was defenceless and Leybourne dumped him on the seat of his trunks with a right hand.

The Coventry boxer needed only a few more punches to finish the fight, leaving Dennett groggy with some pinpoint shots and forcing the referee

to jump in. Green predicts a good future for Leybourne, one of eight boxers currently carded at the gym.

Green had the majority of his 30 amateur bouts for the club and went on to have six pro fights, the only loss inflicted by Harlem Eubank in a fight screened on Sky Sports in October, 2017.

Green had to retire after a detached retina was detected, ending his hopes of facing Coventry rival Jordan Cooke.

Green said: “I was wondering what to do because I missed boxing.

“I had to retire from pro boxing, but it’s hard to walk away from something you’ve been doing your whole life.

“Red Corner fizzled out after the coach left around six years ago and I decided to start it up again.”
