Police renew appeal after graffiti daubed on hero’s memorial

- By CLAIRE HARRISON News Reporter

POLICE have dubbed the actions of a graffiti yob who defaced a memorial to a young hero solider as ‘disgusting.’

A memorial plaque to teenage soldier Louis Carter, from Nuneaton, was defaced with a graffiti tag.

It was discovered by his horrified brother Sam, less than 24 hours before Remembrance Sunday, causing anger and upset across the community.

The plaque sits in front of a tree planted in Riversley Park in memory of the soldier who tragically lost his young life while helping a wounded colleague in Afghanistan in August 2009.

The graffiti tag, in a red ‘A’ shape, was quickly removed prior to the Remembrance Sunday service. But in clearing the graffiti some of the lettering has now disappeared.

That something so sacred has been damaged is not lost on the police team and Sergeant Martin Hewish from Nuneaton Safer Neighbourhood Team said officers were determined to catch those responsible.

“The local community has understandably reacted with anger and disgust at the damage caused to this memorial to a local hero who gave his life in defence of this country,” Sgt

Hewish said. “We share this sentiment and are committed to finding out who is responsible. We’d like to hear from anyone who can help us identify the person who caused this damage.”

Anyone who recognises the tag or has any information that can help officers identify who is responsible for causing the damage should report it at www.warwickshire.police.uk/report or by calling 101.

Details can also be passed on to officers via the independent charity Crimestoppers, which is free to call from a landline and confidential, on 0800 555 111.
