Treats to tickle the tastebuds

WE SAMPLE SOME OF WHAT COVENTRY’S CHRISTMAS MARKET HAS TO OFFER

- By NICK SMITH

TYING in with Coventry’s Christmas lights switch-on in Broadgate was the opening of the city’s Christmas Market.

The market offers an array of food, treats, drinks and sweets.

This year’s stalls boast mulled wine, flame-grilled BBQ, German swing grill, toasted marshmallows, Tennessee fried chicken, Yorkshire pudding wraps, candied nuts, crepes, chocolate kisses and more, organisers said. The market opened on Tuesday and will run until January 8. I sampled some the festive fare on offer.

TURKEY YORKSHIRE

WRAP

First up, we have a Turkey Yorkshire wrap. It was packed with meat, veg, potatoes and gravy, along with a pig in blanket for an extra pound. While it may look like a challenge to eat without getting yourself into a mess, it held together surprisingly well. It’s not the cheapest item on offer at the market at £9, but you definitely won’t be going home hungry afterwards. Excellent.

LOADED PULLED PORK FRIES

One of the best things on offer here. Who doesn’t love loaded fries? And what you see is what you get. BBQ pulled pork, cheese and chips. The food was tasty and the portions are sizable. Not unreasonable for £6.

BRATWURST

Again coming in at £6 and, again, you know what you’ll be getting. This was a good quality and good size German bratwurst sausage. I would definitely head down here again to grab one of these, maybe be a little more adventurous with some currywurst.

CHURROS

Now, for dessert there was an option of crepes or churros, so we decided that churros were the best bet. Not really much to say about these except that if you like warm stretched out donuts (for those who don’t know what churros are), covered in sugar and warm chocolate sauce, you’re onto a winner!
