Historic pub to open after makeover

- By CLAIRE HARRISON News Reporter

AN historic Nuneaton pub is to re-open after a £280,000 makeover. This week the new look Hare & Hounds pub will open its doors.

Admiral Taverns said it will be ‘completely transformed’ and include brand new furniture, fixtures, fittings and flooring throughout.

Split into two, one area will be a ‘cosy lounge’ while the other side will be a sports room with darts board and pool table.

Outside, the pub will receive brand new lighting and signage, and its garden will boast new benches and festoon lighting. The changes are part of its move to the company’s Proper Pub portfolio.

But it is one that has not been welcomed by some locals, with some even writing to Admiral Taverns to have a change of heart and leave the pub, which has been open for decades, as it was and not turn it into a ‘sports bar’.

However, on Thursday, April 18, the new look ‘Hare’un’ will open its doors under new operator Sarah Jane.

“I can’t believe how fantastic the pub is looking already.

‘‘The transformation is just incredible and I can’t wait to see the finished result,” she said,

“I’m really looking forward to getting behind the bar, meeting all our customers and supporting our local community in any way we can. We’ll be starting off by raising money to have defibrillator installed.

“Pubs are the hub of their community, and we can’t wait to be the hub of Nuneaton.”

Matthew Gurney, Operations Director for Proper Pubs, added: “I’m really excited about the opening of The Hare & Hounds.

‘‘The team is working incredibly hard on the refurbishment, which I can already see is paying off, and we’re just finalising the finishing touches ready to open.

“On behalf of the Proper Pubs team, we would like to wish our community hero, Sarah, every inch of success for the future in making The Hare & Hounds a fantastic hub of the community.”

The Hare and Hounds is one of the oldest pubs in the town, dating back to 1904 and it famously survived various bombing campaigns during the Second World War.
