I really love river cruising but I’d like to try a more adventurous river trip this year. Do you have any good suggestions?

Anna, Newcastle

Will Sarson, Head of Product at Riviera Travel, says: This is a growing trend, as guests who have previously sailed on European rivers look to broaden their horizons and explore further afield. Riviera has unforgettable river cruises available on the Nile and the Mekong in 2024, providing unparalleled opportunities to discover fascinating cultures and monuments, with shore excursions designed to take guests into the heart of the destinations.

Our 15-day A Journey on the Mekong voyage will take you to Cambodia and Siem Reap, the gateway to Angkor and its amazing temples, and Ho Chi Minh City, to visit the historic Cu-Chi tunnels. Meanwhile, the Wonders of the Nile: Cairo to Aswan river cruise includes the chance to see the Pyramids at Giza, the temples of Karnak and Luxor, as well as guided tours of lesser-visited sites such as the city of Amarna.

We’re thinking of taking our daughter, sonin-law and two grandkids under the age of 12 on a cruise this year. Which lines would you suggest and why?

Dave Mills, Chief Commercial Officer, Iglu Cruise says: There are so many great choices available for family cruises. Sailing from a UK port is ideal for an all-ages group, so it’s not surprising that this is one of the fastest growing sectors of the cruise industry. There are two cruises I would recommend:

Ambassador Cruise Line’s Summer Multi-Generational Fjordland cruise from Tilbury London is great for families. Entertainment and activities onboard these cruises, including cupcake-decorating and table tennis, are tailored to getting three generations together.

MSC Virtuosa is great for families too. On its Spain & Portugal cruise leaving from Southampton, you’ll enjoy a great-value approach to onboard inclusions, such as pre-paid drinks, dining packages and kids’ fun passes. MSC ensures that you have an awesome all-inclusive experience with no surprise bill at the end. However, cabin options can fill up on the day the itinerary is open for sale.
