Benno Remidemi

Fun styling belies a mini cargo bike with big ambitions and capabilities to match

-

Straight out of California, Benno specialises in producing high-quality utility e-bikes. The Remidemi is the smallest cargo bike in its current four-bike line-up, but it still has a combined weight rating of 180kg to make it a mean load carrier despite its diminutive size.

The funky step-through frame, upright handlebar, small 20-inch wheels and enormously fat tyres make the Remidemi stand out from the crowd, although these attributes aren’t just for show. The massive tyres offer damping and traction at speed, while the low frame and comfortable position promote a safe, stable ride – all important factors when you have a big load on board.

Yet a good cargo bike isn’t all about being able to handle masses of weight.

It’s also about how easy it is to fit items on the bike. The Remidemi has you covered here with plenty of additional accessories, including multiple child seats, a cargo rack, a tray and an insulated box, all of which use the popular Racktime mounting system. There’s also an optional front rack, while the double kickstand is a must for anyone wanting to load up the bike.

Driving it all forward is a Bosch Performance Line mid-drive motor. A modern classic, it combines hill-climbing power with reliability and reasonable pricing. The Benno’s standard 400Wh or uprated 500Wh Powerpack batteries don’t measure up against the largest e-cargo bikes, but the range should be more than enough for most users given that the bike is designed for riding around town.

The rest of the parts are practical too. Ninespeed derailleur gears, mid-drive climbing ability and small wheels help you and your load up all but the steepest of hills, while hydraulic disc brakes mean safe, controlled descending on the other side. There are also hardwired lights and full-length mudguards for ease of use, night or day and in all weather.

The Remidemi is worth a look if you don’t need the absolute maximum cargo-carrying ability but want a high-quality, dependable e-cargo bike that’s comfy, safe to ride, easy to store and great up hills. You might soon find yourself saving the planet Californian-style.
