‘I need the impetus only a human coach can provide’

-

Adam Thompson, 32, from Reading, is a second-cat racer who rides for Spokes BPC RT

CW: You have a coach and also use Zwift, why is that? Adam Thompson: Zwift passes the time nicely when the weather outside is poor and I can’t ride. I like having something extra to concentrate on — overtaking other Zwifters during sessions. CW: Do you ever race online? AT: I would if I could be sure it was a level playing field, but I’m a little bit sceptical about the amount of digital EPO out there! If weight was verified, I’m sure I’d push harder in a race scenario. I might use Zwift racing in the winter. CW: If Zwift works well for you, why do you need a coach? AT: I have a habit of just doing what I enjoy rather than doing the right type of training to make me a better rider. I like the accountability that a coach brings. There’s more impetus to go out and train when I might otherwise skip it. CW: Do you think technology could ever replace coaching? AT: Maybe in the future, but right now I doubt a computer’s ability to give me more than standard training based on generic principles. I feel like coaching provides something much more individual.
