Madison magic

- Simon Richardson Editor

Anyone who is a fan of Madison racing (let’s face it, who isn’t?) has an exciting few years ahead of them in the run up to Tokyo 2020. Six Day London was the second major international track event since it was announced that the Madison would make its Olympic return, and we’re seeing the very first glimpse of team dynamics taking shape.

As soon as it was announced the two-rider race would be back, Mark Cavendish stated his intention to ride. As a two-time world champion in the discipline it’s hard to imagine he won’t be selected. The question is likely to be: who will ride with him?

What makes it so exciting is while it seems a long way off, there are only three more winters between now and Tokyo. When you take into account road commitments it doesn’t leave many races for a pairing to gel and also gain qualification points. In taking on Cameron Meyer and Callum Scotson at the London Six, Cavendish and Kennaugh just got off to a good start.

For the women’s pairings it’s more of an open book. As such a new event you get the feeling anyone could pop up and take one of those two places. The good thing is, the Brits are already leading the way in the discipline.
