When Patxi Vila started to train Sagan in spring 2015, the Slovak had already won the Tour’s green jersey three times in a row (from 2012 to 2014), individual stages at the Tour and the Vuelta, a E3 Harelbeke in 2014 and the Ghent-wevelgem in 2013 — among other victories. And yet, working with Vila, he was set to become even more successful.

Winning three World Championships in a row is something nobody else has done in the history of the sport. If he wins a fourth — whether or not consecutively — he’ll be the very first cyclist ever to do so. Sagan’s other major success since teaming up with Vila have been his two additional green jerseys at the Tour. This year, disqualification quashed his chance of matching Eric Zabel’s record of six in a row. He also won the Tour of Flanders and another Ghent-wevelgem in 2016, the Grand Prix Cycliste de Quebec in 2016 and 2017, the Tour of California in 2016 and more stages at the Tour and the Vuelta.
