brits abroad

why belgium?

I came out last year for a few weeks and I felt like it suited me. There are a lot of bigger races as well and the style of racing interested me. I love the atmosphere at races; all the locals come out with their chairs to watch.

where do you live?

I’m good friends with Issy Stone and we both moved to Antwerp to live with two other girls. The big, long canals are great for efforts.

what type of rider are you? Tests on the bike tell me I am an all-rounder and don’t have one particular strength. I like all races, really, but probably prefer longer, more sustained efforts rather than sprinting.

How was the season?

I got quite ill at the beginning of the season but stupidly kept racing and training and eventually found out I had glandular fever. The first three months weren’t great racing-wise, but I learned a lot.

season highlights?

I found a little women’s league consisting of 40 riders and shorter races. I used them to regain confidence and fitness and had four top-10s. I sometimes did men’s races in older categories and in one race in June was the first woman, which was a turning point.

biggest thing you’ve learned? Not to hesitate or be nervous and sit at the back. Next season hopefully I’ll get some good results. CW — proud to support the dave rayner Fund @daveraynerfund
