Who was your lockdown hero?

-

■ I‘m the chairman of the Milford Tritons Cycling Club and this spring we decided to embark on a truly mammoth challenge to raise funds for two local charities during the lockdown restrictions. The first charity was Get The Boys A Lift, which provides free mental health counselling sessions. The second was Withybush Hospital ICU.

We set out to cover 2,100 miles – the length of this year’s Tour de France – not once but 10 times, totalling 21,000 miles between us. We achieved our target well ahead of schedule, pushing past the 21,000-mile mark on day 25.

We had an average of 30 riders taking part every day, ranging from six years old up to 70-plus. There were some restrictions in place in accordance with government guidelines, and a handful of riders managed to complete the full 25 days. Our fundraising page contains daily updates – as it stands, we’ve raised £2,000. www.gofundme.com/f/mtcc20 Dan Devine

■ I would like to nominate my 73-year-old dad, Noel Williams, as Lockdown Hero. Having been knocked off his bike and put into hospital for a week with several fractured vertebrae in October 2018, he wanted to pay back the NHS for the excellent service he received during his treatment, while the NHS was facing its own unique crisis. He decided to cycle to the front gate of each individual member of his choir (Brymbo Male Voice choir in Wrexham) and convert the combined total 197 miles ridden to pounds, donating to NHS Charities Together. Thus far he has raised £1,220. www.justgiving.com/ fundraising/carey-williams4 Carey Williams

■ From not having a bike and not having cycled for over 25 years, my 50-year-old pal Bruno has done great. He’s not fast but has cycled (never walking) Kidd’s Hill, Ditchling Beacon, Devil’s Dyke and more, including 80-mile-plus rides. Graeme Sandell

■ Dean Warewolf did six 24-hour Zwift rides to raise money for the NHS in six weeks... amazing. Les Thomas

■ My lockdown hero was my colleague James Harrison, a triathlete who was killed in a collision with a vehicle in Edinburgh last week while cycling to work at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. James was a husband and dad, and a lead research nurse who selflessly volunteered to work in the ICU during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The sense of loss and outrage is palpable. He was a hero. Bruce Forrest

NEXT WEEK’S BIG QUESTION…

What’s the best bit of kit you’ve bought this year?
