Tour de France, stage four 4 July, 1973

Joop Zoetemelk wins the fourth stage of the Tour de France in 1973. This sprint into Nancy was his second win in four days, having also won the opening time trial. The 26-year-old Dutchman would go on to become a GC winner in later years, but in the 1973 Tour he had been dealt a blow when, on stage three, eventual yellow jersey winner Luis Ocaña escaped up the road in a group, putting two minutes into him. Still, by the end of the race Zoetemelk would be fourth on GC, albeit more than 26 minutes behind the Spaniard.

Zoetemelk would win Paris-nice three times in his career, but won the Tour only once, in 1980. He won the Vuelta a España the year before too.

After he retired, Zoetemelk spent more than a decade as a directeur sportif, mostly with the Superconfex team, which later became Rabobank. Now into his seventies, he can still sometimes be found in the paddock of races, including the Tour de France.

He remains the last Dutchman to win the Tour.
