What extremes have you gone to to keep cool on a hot summer ride?

-

■ Dunno about extreme but I did nearly drown myself in a village fountain in Germany a few years back. Andrewpayne

■ Freeze your gels before you go out. Remembering to take them out the freezer also helps... Stephen Louch

■ I know someone who once rode into a swimming pool. They were surprised by how quickly the bike cut through the water. They thought it was going to offer some resistance when it hit the water and braced themselves. Instead it dropped like a stone! Mike Reynolds

■ Shoved six ice packs in my back pockets and froze my bottles as well as putting shop-bought ice cubes in my helmet holes. Ben White

■ Freezing bottles overnight is a great way to keep water cool. Just make sure you don’t need to drink during the first 30 minutes of your ride. Simon Clarke

■ Just wear more layers when it’s 25°C, so when it’s 35°C it doesn’t feel that bad. Tom Cullen

■ Throw in the towel and stop at a bar for a cold beer. Anthony Jones

■ I’m very old-school and always wear a vest under my racing jersey. When the temperature reaches 30°C or so I leave it off, but I always remember my old mentor, John Else, and wonder what he would say if he knew I was out with no vest on!

Kate Churchill

■ I flipped my Zwifting time from late afternoon to very early in the morning, hoping to miss the heat build-up in the front room... but even with two fans and the A/C running I still end up as a puddle under the bike. Jan Darnell

■ Thinking I was really clever, I once splashed some water on a jersey and popped it in the freezer for an hour before going out. It was so cold that I chickened out of putting it on and went and got one out of the cupboard instead. Lucy Sullivan

■ Stopping for a Solero. Andy Whitehouse

■ Does living in the UK count? Nathan James
