he power meter market is now awash with young pretenders, each promising to measure power in a more exotic way than the last. Yet despite the influx of hi-tech new products, the two most enduring approaches to power measurement have barely changed since their inception.
SRM’S spider-based design remains the gold standard, but the downside is that you still need to remortgage your house to afford one. Popular opinion holds that Powertap’s hub-based G3 meter is still one of the best alternatives in terms of accuracy and consistency, but unlike SRM the Powertap has managed to move with the times and compete on price with many of the other options on the market today.
The latest incarnation of the G3 is a veritable steal – DT Swiss’s wide, tubeless-ready R460 rims retail for £40 apiece, so add in the cost of spokes and labour to build up the wheelset, and it effectively pushes the price of the Powertap power meter below £300.
Not bad when you consider the G3’s proven reliability, connectivity and claimed +/-1.5% level of accuracy.
