VIRTUAL WORLD
Zwift is quickly becoming synonymous with virtual training. CEO Eric Min explains why
Cyclist: How would you describe Zwift?
Eric Min: Zwift is an online environment that aims to host a global network of cyclists who want to improve their fitness using technology in a fun and engaging way.
Cyc: Who is it aimed at?
EM: Everyone, I guess. We want to make people more active more often, so we try to make sure everyone who rides a bike can enjoy it. EM: Indoor training has its efficiencies and Zwift makes that more engaging – you can build workouts like normal but Zwift lets you do them in a group too. It also lets you do something unstructured without having to stare at a garage wall. EM: I could harp on about Zwift’s graphics, user interface and riding environments but its biggest benefit has got to be the community. Loads of people can connect from all around the world. They can build content and organise events.
Cyc: Why is virtual training getting more popular?
EM: Riders are realising that indoor training can be more than just a stopgap for the winter. If used well it can be a core part of overall training because it’s efficient and far more entertaining than it was. EM: We’ve got plenty of ideas – things like more maps to ride on, more races and events to participate in. We launched Zwift with Apple TV recently, and the Zwift Academy will continue to develop as a talent identification tool as well. EM: There are a lot of ways we’re going to approach it, including smart scales and other weigh-in procedures. We look to our community for help too – calling riders out whose performances are out of line with reality.
