Rugby star shows her artistic side

IT’S been quite a few weeks for rugby-playing artist Naomi Davies.

The 22-year-old University of South Wales student was a member of the Ynysybwl team that won the Bowl Final at the WRU Women’s Super Cup Finals Day on May 21, beating Gorseinon 11-5.

Having just recovered from her exertions, Naomi – who also plays competitively for the USW team – then had to take life a bit more slowly to get ready to showcase her skills at USW’s Art Practice Degree Show, which is being held at the University’s Treforest campus between June 3-8.

Naomi has a keen interest in portraiture and human features, with the more abstract work of Jackson Pollock just one of her many influences.

“My previous artwork has been built from the theme of beauty, and how the ideal beauty is conceived through the eye of the beholder,” she said.

“Gender and the representation of the female has also been a key element of my work.

“Basing my art practice on the human face, I will show various compositions using students that are currently on my course.

“I will focus on painting and how I can manipulate the paint in diverse ways to create contemporary works of art.”

After graduating from USW, Naomi plans to go on to study for a PGCE and then become an art teacher.

The Art Practice Degree Show will be at USW’s Oriel y Bont and Kidwelly building, on Treforest Campus. The opening launch is between 6pm and 8pm on Friday, June 3, and it will then be open from 10am until 4pm between Saturday, June 4, and Wednesday, June 8.
