BRIDGEND STREET ..... 0 PONTYPRIDD TOWN ... 0
PONTYPRIDD Town were presented with the Welsh Football League Division Three trophy after a keenly fought but largely uneventful end-of-season showdown with thirdplaced Bridgend Street at The Willows in Splott.
The match, which was being replayed after the original fixture in March was cancelled after a serious injury to Bridgend Street goalkeeper Damian Lack forced the abandonment of the game in the first half, was played in front of a large crowd of nearly 300 spectators who had descended on The Willows for a meeting of two of Division Three’s best footballing teams.
Ilias Doumas and Tom Rutherford went close for Pontypridd Town before Owain Morgan came within inches of putting the Dragons ahead towards the end of the first half, forcing Bridgend Street’s Nicky King into making a fine save to keep the scores level.
Bridgend Street pushed forward in numbers as the game came to a close, knowing that a point would not be enough to prevent second-placed Abergavenny Town from making further headway on the weekend in search of the final promotion place in the league.
Paul Fowler forced a fine save from Pontypridd’s goalkeeper Ryan Griffiths before another Bridgend Street player rattled the crossbar from just outside the penalty area.
The Dragons were presented with the trophy immediately following the final whistle by Welsh League vice-chairman Mike Jones and secretary Ken Jones.
