NO note was needed to excuse these past and present pupils from a party to celebrate 20 years of success for a school’s PE department.

The PE department at Ysgol Gyfun Rhydywaun in Penywaun held a special evening in Aber- cwmboi to celebrate two decades of great sporting success since the school was established in 1995.

It provides Welsh-medium education for pupils from Penderyn to Aber- cynon in the Cynon Valley and from Pontsticill to Quakers Yard in Merthyr Tydfil.

The occasion was a chance for former pupils from the very first intake of the school to the current sixth form pupils to reflect on their experi- ences of PE and sport at Rhydywaun.

The evening was organised by Dai Cambourne, head of PE, and 180 former pupils attended.

“The night was a great success, with the element of a reunion allowing former pupils to have a good old fashioned catch-up,” said Dai.

“I’m overwhelmed by the amount who turned up to celebrate with us and there were many others unable to attend as some of those were travelling to France for the Euros.

“We are so proud that our former pupils wanted to attend and it was fantastic to hear them use the Welsh language with each other and reminisce of lessons, school games and competitions of the past.

“This may become an annual event, judging by its popularity.”
