THE former Ferrari’s Bakery site in Hirwaun will go under the hammer at auction next month, as plans to build a supermarket there could be resurrected.

Full planning permission was granted for a supermarket, petrol station and car park at the Bryngelli Industrial Estate during 2013, but the new supermarket serving the upper end of the Cynon Valley has never materialised.

The permission includes building a new access to a 3,252 (gross), 1,898 (net) square-metre food store from Rhigos Road. It was noted the store would sell 75% food products.

Now, on the instruction of Scarborough Group, Lambert Smith Hampton Auctions will attempt to sell the land on July 11.

It will go under the hammer at a London auction with a guide price of £250,000 to £300,000.

Simon Riggall, director and auctioneer for Lambert Smith Hampton, said: “As I understand it, the supermarket would have gone ahead there if it wasn’t for the hiccough a few years back, when supermarkets were trying to build new stores left, right and centre.

“The planning permission is retained and a supermarket could be built there.

“That’s not to say you wouldn’t get away with an application for housing on the site, in the current way of things.

“It remains a big site with good access from the main road and we’d look to hit the guide price for it.”

The now-vacant land of the former Ferrari’s Bak- ery plant in Hirwaun

The 6.7-acre site is currently vacant, having previously served various Ferrari’s Bakery stores.

In 2008, Ferrari’s went into liquidation and some 25 stores across South Wales were forced to close.

Lambert Smith Hampton’s marketing material for the Hirwaun site adds: “The site was previously operated as a bakery and has a number of derelict buildings arranged on the site, which have not been inspected internally.

“Whilst the site has planning permission for a retail food store and petrol filling station, the site lends itself to a variety of different uses subject to obtaining the necessary consents.”
