Youngsters give it some welly in fantastic flower contest
THESE great photos show the fantastic efforts of pupils at a Cynon Valley primary school in their colourful “flower in a welly” competition this summer.
Youngsters at Penrhiwceiber Primary School have sought the help of their families in the fun competition, which saw them paint and decorate a welly in bright colours before choosing a plant to grow inside it.
There were more than 50 entries in the competition, and the the Penrhiwceiber school is now awash with colour as a result.
Eight winners were chosen from the collection, with pupils Oliver Wilson, Ava-Rose Williams, Ethan Davies, Jayden John, Amy-Leigh John, Lily Bruce, Elliott Davies and Brandon Williams excelling with their designs.
Their prizes included gardening kits and bird boxes to reflect the theme of the competition.
Richard Makin, head- teacher of Penrhiwceiber Primary, said: “The pupils have gone flower crazy again this summer with a very popular ‘flower in a welly’ competition.
“It has got all the families racking their creative brains over ways to paint and plant their welly to make it look the best.
“Last year the ‘flowers in a recycled item’ competition was just as competitive, and now the playgrounds in Penrhiwceiber are awash with colour and creativity again.
“Thanks to the chair of governors, Dr Barbara John, who acted as judge and picked out eight winners from amongst the 50-plus wellies.
“Mrs Pearce, Mrs Meyler and the children in the gardening club will now be hanging, watering and looking after the ‘welly-boot plants’ to make sure they look nice all summer long.”
