A TEENAGER from Cwmbach has completed his transformation from a civilian into a Royal Navy sailor and is now one step closer to a career at sea.

Trainee Engineering Technician Thomas Payne, 19, arrived at HMS Raleigh, the Royal Navy’s training base in Cornwall, in March.

During a 10-week course, he has been given a thorough induction into the Royal Navy, learning skills that he will rely upon throughout his time in the service.

The course culminates with the passing-out-parade attended by family and friends.

The former pupil of St John The Baptist Church in Wales High School, said: “I joined the Royal Navy for a better future and a stable career.

“I also wanted to travel the world doing something I love. It feels amazing to walk out of the gates as a member of the Royal Navy.”

With the first phase of his training complete, Thomas will transfer to HMS Sultan in Hampshire.

There, he will learn the necessary marine engineering skills to keep the ship running smoothly, safely and effectively.

He will be required to work on all areas of the ship, from the hull and engines to the electrical, fuel, hydraulic and fire fighting systems.

He’ll also be trained to make spare parts and other vital components in the ship’s workshops, as the ship needs to be self- sufficient if it must stay at sea for weeks at a time.

Nine core maritime skills form the backbone of the Royal Navy’s Initial Naval Training, which Thomas completed.

These include basic naval discipline, navigation skills and fitness.

Exercises are done which hone these skills, building a well-rounded member of the Royal Navy.

Recruits can take the helm of their own medium sized inflatable boat during a waterborne orienteering exercise and undergo training in combat skills which include survival in the field.

Completing the training gives the recruit a vital introduction to the elements of naval life.

Details of career opportunities within the Royal Navy are available online at www.royalnavy.mod.uk or by calling the recruitment line on 03456 00 53 02.
