A COUPLE in their eighties who still go dancing together twice a week have celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary.

Emrys and Audrey Rowlands, who live in the Rhondda, marked the milestone of 60 years of marriage on Wednesday, July 27.

The fitness-conscious couple met while out dancing in Porth and got married at Pontypridd Register Office in 1956 when they were both still in their twenties.

The couple have lived their entire married life in Audrey’s family home in Ynyshir, and they became parents to two children, Catherine and Brian.

They are now kept busy with their extended family of four granddaughters and two great-granddaughters, but Emrys, 84, and Audrey, 86, ensure they still have time to keep up with tradition and one of their favourite pastimes by going out dancing together twice a week.

Emrys also keeps fit by swimming 1km every day while Audrey – described as the best Welsh cake maker in town – attends chair aerobics every Thursday.

The family celebrated the week before their anniversary with a meal at the Glynrhedyn, in Ferndale, while the couple went to their usual dance with friends at the Penygraig Labour Club in Tonypandy.

Daughter Catherine Smith said: “They were overwhelmed by the number of cards and especially the one from the Queen and messages from around the world that came via Facebook!

“Mam still can’t quite grasp how quickly things go viral on social media but it’s good when it’s good news.

“They really do enjoy life. When asked how they’ve coped with difficulties in life, they always say ‘we just had to get on with it’.

“Keep fit, keep smiling, keep dancing!”
