Sports centre car park and roads update
ABERCYNON Sports Centre will soon have several more upgrades on top of its recent £700,000 investment – to improve its car park and the roads leading to the building.
Rhondda Cynon Taf council recently invested in the Cynon Valley sports centre, introducing a number of upgrades including a brand new state-of-theart gym.
Now, another wave of investment will focus on the area surrounding the building – with works due to start on September 12.
A new surface and additional car park spaces – including more disabled parking closer to the centre’s main entrance – will be added.
The footpath leading from Abercynon Rugby Club towards the centre will be extended and resurfaced to provide full pedestrian access.
Currently, the footpath ends before it reaches the car park. The access road to the centre’s car park will also be resurfaced and improved.
Andrew Morgan, leader of RCT council, said: “The improvements at Abercynon Sports Centre are a good example of how different elements of the £200m RCT invests are coming together to make a huge difference to the lives of residents and the standard of the facilities we offer.
“It is clear that our effort and investment in leisure is paying off as since the new gym at Hawthorn, the first of the investment schemes, opened, some 1,300 people have joined Leisure for Life across the county.
“I am extremely proud of the way our staff, supported by my cabinet member for leisure Ann Crimmings, are delivering on this investment programme.
“In the week since the new gym and studios opened [in Abercynon], over 50 new members have signed up to Leisure for Life memberships.”
The council says there is likely to be some disruption to parking while work is going on, but the team at the centre will be on hand to assist and advise members of the public.
Abercynon Sports Centre will be open as normal throughout the work.
