DON’T forget that the Tour of Britain cycle race comes to the Cynon Valley on Thursday - and there are parking and traffic changes you need to know about.

The race goes through most of the valley.

MOTORISTS heading to Aberdare for the Tour of Britain event this Thursday are being asked to use a free shuttle bus service from the nearby Ynys site.

Rhondda Cynon Taf council says there will be no parking inside the grounds of Aberdare Park ahead of the 10.45am start, with the build-up underway from 9am – and motorists are asked to use the Ynys car parks (the postcode is CF44 7RP).

A Park and Ride service will start at 8am with the last pick-up at 10.30am – and return journeys will start after the riders have set off, at 11am.

Stage five starts at Aberdare Park and travels through the Cynon Valley to Aberdare town centre, Aberaman, Abercwmboi, Glenboi, Mountain Ash town bridge, the A4059 and the Abercynon Roundabout.

On the day of the race, parking will be strictly prohibited along the route and the council is requesting that motorists park elsewhere until the riders pass through the area.

There will be a traffic order in place stopping parking along the route between 6am and 11.45am, and any vehicles not complying may be removed.

Meanwhile, household waste and recycling collections along the route, which usually take place on Thursdays, will be collected on Saturday, September 10.

Trade waste and recycling along the race route due to be collected on Thursday, September 8, will be collected on Wednesday, September 7.

Households and businesses affected will have received a letter informing them about the changes.

Maureen Webber, RCT council deputy leader, said: “Our Park and Ride facility in nearby Aberdare town centre will provide all motorists with ample parking and a reliable service in order to get to Aberdare Park to soak up the atmosphere on race day.

“I hope as many people as possible come along to cheer the riders on.”
