Don’t delay in registering for place at 2016 Nos Galan event

-

IF you want to take part in the Nos Galan races this New Year’s Eve, you really have to get your place secured soon.

Organisers of the famous Mountain Ash running event, celebrating the legend of Guto Nyth Bran, say they have had 1,200 entries for the December 31 event this year, leaving just 270 more available.

Entries for the elite race in the event were due to close at 3pm on Tuesday, October 4, it was also confirmed.

Ann Crimmings, cabinet member for environment, leisure and culture, and also chairman of the Nos Galan Committee, said: “Each year demand for places is great, but this year is the fastest that race categories have filled up in the history of the event.

“This year we are experiencing unprecedented demand for places and we are likely to be full to capacity very soon - three months before the event on New Year’s Eve.”

This year marks the 58th anniversary of the Nos Galan Road Races, which attracts 1,500 athletes of all ages each year.

“Its popularity has grown dramatically in recent years – with just 300 people taking part in 2003.”

The event is likely to be expanded for its 60th year in 2018, with the major Cross Valley Link project allowing the course route to be altered and the capacity to be raised.

But, for 2016, the number of participants cannot be increased.

Coun Crimmings added: “If you have not already done so, please register soon to avoid disappointment.

“We hope, with the continued support of the community, we can, from 2018, look to expand the event.”
