A MOVIE that charts the rise of the South Wales’ valleys rock scene has sold out ahead of a digital release next year.

A limited amount of DVDs were produced of Massive – The Amazing Rise and Fall, the film which tells the story of hugely successful groups such as Funeral For A Friend, The Blackout and Kids In Glass Houses, who emerged from the valleys between 2000 and 2010 and the thriving underground scene from which they came.

They have now all been snapped up – but those that missed out will be able to buy a digital version of the movie, that features interviews with those who shaped the scene, telling their stories of an amazing time for Welsh rock music, when it is released on iTunes next year.

Massive is the brainchild of musician-turned-filmmaker Jamie Black, from Porth, a former member of local post-hardcore band Shape Of My Addiction.

“Between 2000-10 there was an underground music scene in South Wales that was unique and meant the world to those involved, but to the outside world, it didn’t exist,” said Jamie, who has put the project together with crea- tive director Mark Butler and rock journalist Lais Martins-Waring

“Later, the bands and artists would find success and acclaim, but before all that, they were young, passionate and a close community of friends who just dreamed about being massive.”

The director, a former film student, has amassed an impressive array of interviews.

Bands featured include Kids In Glass Houses, The Blackout, Funeral for a Friend, Midasuno, Dopamine, Covergirl, Shaped By Fate, Attack! Attack!, When Reason Sleeps,, Indifference, Shape Of f My Addiction, , Flailing Wail, Straight Lines, Said Mike, and d Juniper.

And it has u nderst a ndably proven a huige hit with rock fans who snapped up copies of the moviei whenh they were released last month.

“The positivity and messages of praise from everyone have really been incredible,” said Jamie. “I just wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone who picked up a copy of the film.

He added: “We purposefully released it on an old format (DVD) and also de- layed its iTunes release to 2017 because even though it’s sold out, we want those who have bought the album to share and lend the film to their friends. We’re encouraging people to show it to anyone you they think might like it and to pass it a around.”

The movie has al also reached a wide audience – if its global reach is any measure.

Jamie said: “M “Massive has shippedhi d ini the hundreds, to every corner of the UK to Canada, the US, France, Spain, Germany, Australia, and every single one of the valleys.

“It’s also been included in the Welsh national archives.”
