Aberdare to take on team of Swansea legends

A CYNON Valley football club will take on a Swansea City all-star team this weekend to raise money for a local cancer charity.

Swans legends Lee Trundle, Alan Tate, Andy Robinson and James Thomas will be among the team walking out at Aberaman Park to take on Welsh League Division Two team Aberdare Town – who’ve invited along some of their own old boys for the one-off friendly game.

The match is in aid of Rowan Tree Cancer Care, which is based in Mountain Ash – and came about after former Swans captain Tate spoke as a special guest at an Aberdare Town club night earlier this year.

Steve Pearce, treasurer at the Welsh League Division Two club, said everyone at the club was looking forward to the game against familiar faces from the Premier League club.

He said: “We had Alan Tate up the club as a speaker, and from there we got in contact with the person who organises the Swansea All Stars.

“They said they would be more than happy to send a team up, as long as it was for charity. So it’s all about having a bit of fun, and raising as much as we can on the day for Rowan Tree.

“There will be a charge to come in, and there will also be also refreshments and an auction of some Swansea City items – and it will all go to the charity.

“We are hoping it will be a good day for the club. We’ve got some of our old Aberaman and Aberdare boys, who played around 15 years ago, taking part too, and it will be nice for all the kids to see some of the Swansea stars, and have a kick about on the pitch before the game.

“Everyone’s invited to turn up on the day – the more the merrier.”

Admission is £5 per adult and £3 per child, and you don’t need to buy tickets in advance of the day.

The match at Aberaman Park kicks off at 2.30pm on Sunday, October 23.
