CHILDREN from two primary schools have helped open a Cynon Valley town’s memorial garden – and launch the local Poppy Appeal.

Year 5 and 6 pupils from Miskin Primary and Caegarw Primary took part in the opening service of the Mountain Ash Memorial Garden, near the town centre last week.

They were met by members of the Royal British Legion, some of their parents and grandparents, and the vicar of St Margaret’s Church.

The event, which saw pupils sing hymns and recite poems, served to launch the Mountain Ash and District Poppy Appeal for 2016.

Fran Davies, headteacher of Miskin Primary School, said the event was a thought-provoking experience.

She said: “As part of the service Miskin Primary pupils recited poems The Inquisitive Mind of a Child and In Flanders Fields, as well and performing Make Me a Channel of Your Peace.

“All pupils took part in the short opening service singing Peace Perfect Peace, together before the Dedication led by the representative of the Moun- tain Ash and District Royal British Legion.”

Pupils from both schools placed crosses in the grounds of the garden.

Mrs Davies added: “Schools study World War Two as part of their curriculum. We also feel at Miskin Primary that it is important to relate this to the community that we live in, so that we ensure future generations recognise and fully appreciate the hardships and sacrifices made by our forefathers for us.”
