Education in town hailed as new campus progresses
ABERDARE’S new £22m college and the existing “super” school will combine to provide unrivalled education facilities anywhere across the South Wales Valleys, it has been claimed.
Rhondda Cynon Taf council leader Andrew Morgan recently joined Coleg y Cymoedd principal Judith Evans in Robertstown where, a stone’s throw from the £55m Aberdare Community School, a new state-ofthe-art college campus is being built.
Construction began in March this year with First Minister Carwyn Jones getting the development underway by breaking ground at the 2.7-acre site, and 800 students will be taught there in September 2017 – replacing the college’s existing Cy- non Valley campus in Cwmdare.
Plans for the site include the refurbishment of a derelict railway station building, while a 133-space car park served by an existing access will be built.
Having seen progress on the building for himself, Coun Morgan said: “I was delighted to join the college principal on site to view progress on this second major education investment project for Aberdare.
“The presence of two state-of-the-art education facilities – in the form of the £55m Aberdare Community School and this new £22m college campus – is unprecedented, I would argue anywhere, certainly across the South Wales Valleys.
“It will deliver another ultra-modern, highly efficient learning centre right in the heart of Aberdare following the impact the new secondary school has already made.”
The building, which received planning permission in December 2015, will offer courses such as business administration, plumbing, construction and children’s care.
